Gemütlich rollen zwischen ewigem Eis
Bergstraßen mit fantastischem Panorama gibt es wahrlich genug auf der Welt. Doch der Icefields Parkway ist etwas Besonderes: Wo man sonst wilde Serpentinen erklimmen muss, geht es hier 230 Kilometer lang ganz gemächlich durch die kanadischen Rocky Mountains.
Die Szenerie ist überwältigend: Da steht man nun auf der Mainstreet im etwas verschlafenen Jasper, und wohin man den Kopf auch wendet, von überall grüßen hohe Berge zurück. Obwohl es Hochsommer ist und man auch hier in den kanadischen Rocky Mountains schon im T-Shirt draußen frühstückt, tragen die Gipel allesamt eine kleine, weiße Schneemütze.
Der kühle Gruß ist nur der Auftakt zu einer frostigen Fahrt, die nahezu jeder Besucher von Japser auf dem Reiseplan hat: Es geht über den Icefields Parkway. Diese Traumstraße schlängelt sich 230 Kilometer entlang des Hauptkamms der Rocky Mountains in den Süden Richtung Lake Louise und Banff. Sie führt vorbei an 25 Gletschern und sieben gigantischen Eisfeldern, die der Strecke ihren Namen gegeben haben und von 3000 und mehr Metern Höhe herab auf die Straße glänzen.

Das Panorama wahrend der Fahrt ist atemberaubend: In Breitband und Cinemacolor zieht draußen eine der schönsten Landschaften vorbei, die man sich nur vorstellen kann. Nach jeder Kurve öffnet sich der Blick in ein neues Seitental, und ein neuer Abschnitt der Bergkette, die mehr als 20 Dreitausender wie an einer Perlenschnur auffädelt, rückt ins Bild. Dazu schillern tief unten kristallblaue Seen – in denen sich schon wieder der nächste Gletscher spiegelt.

Eine Panoramastraße im XXL-Format
Das mag zwar so klingen, als müsse man dafür nicht unbedingt nach Kanada fliegen, weil man solche Strecken auch in Österreich oder der Schweiz findet. Doch so lang und so gut ausgebaut wie der Icefields Parkway ist keine Panoramastrecke in den Alpen. Die Rocky Mountains sind zwar ähnlich wie das europäische Zentralgebirge, haben aber in Kanada deutlich weitere Täler. Die Strecke ist deshalb keine Passstrasse mit Hunderten von Kurven, Kehren und Serpentinen, sondern vielmehr eine Flaniermeile mit sanft geschwungenen Bögen und nur leichten Steigungen, auf der man ganz entspannt dahin gleiten kann – und dennoch am Bowpass eine Höhe von 2067 Metern gewinnt.
Wer wie ein Rennfahrer am Col de Turini zur Bergprüfung starten möchte, wird von der breiten Asphaltpiste schnell enttäuscht sein und sich zudem Ärger mit den Rangern einhandeln, die entlang der Strecke patrouillieren und ihre Radarpistolen nicht umsonst im Holster tragen. Schließlich herrscht zwischen Jasper und Lake Louise ein Tempolimit von 70 bis 90 km/h. Entsprechend gemütlich geht es auf dem Icefields Parkway zu, den sich im Jahr rund 500.000 Autos, Busse, Motorräder und insbesondere Wohnmobile teilen – nur schwere Laster müssen wegbleiben. Dafür dürfen auch Radfahrer und sogar Inlinescater auf die Strecke.

Bergschafe, Hirsche, Kojoten und Bären am Straßenrand
Das maßvolle Tempo gibt einem nicht nur mehr Zeit für den Panorama-Blick, auch der Straßenrand ist eine nähere Betrachtung Wert. Die Wildwechsel-Warnschilder stehen hier nicht umsonst: Bergschafe und Hirsche springen mehrmals am Tag über den Teer, Kojoten und Elche sind keine Seltenheit, und auch einen Bären wird man hin und wieder im Unterholz entdecken. Dann allerdings ist Vorsicht angesagt: Vorsicht vor den anderen Verkehrsteilnehmern, die mitten auf der Straße anhalten, um Fotos zu schießen. Und Vorsicht vor den Tieren, die eben wild sind und den Mensch nicht immer in ihrer Nähe dulden.

Der Parkway war nie als Transitlinie gedacht, sondern vom ersten Tag an als touristische Route durch das Herz der kanadischen Rockies geplant – eine Straße, die der Landschaft eine Bühne baut und dem Publikum die Augen öffnet, während sie zwei Nationalparks durchquert und auf mehr als 200 Kilometern eine als Weltnaturerbe eingestufte Landschaft erfahrbar macht. Gleichzeitig war sie eine gigantische Arbeitsbeschaffungsmaßnahme. Denn gebaut wurde sie ab 1931 von Hunderten von Arbeitslosen, die sich für 20 Cent am Tag mit Spitzhacken und Schaufeln durch die Berge gruben. Neun Dollar kostet übrigens ein Tagespass für die Route.

Wer an jedem Parkplatz anhält, braucht eine Woche
Wer überall anhält und jedes Angebot nutzt, braucht für die Strecke eine Woche und sollte sein Bett und die entsprechenden Vorräte dabei haben. Denn viele Übernachtungsmöglichkeiten gibt es an der Strecke nicht. Und auch Tankstellen oder Restaurants sind mitten im Nationalpark eher selten. Aber selbst wenn der Reiseplan nur einen Tag für den Icefields Parkway lässt, sollte man in Jasper früh losfahren und wenigstens ein paar Stopps fest einplanen: Die Athabasca Wasserfälle sind ein Muss, der Peyto Lake ist blauer als es ein Maler hinbekäme, und die 90minütige Fahrt mit den urtümlichen Offroad-Bussen auf das auf mehr als 3000 Meter hohe Columbia Icefield – immerhin die größte zusammenhängende Eismasse südlich des Polarkreises – gehört einfach dazu.

Vom Fuß des Icefields geht es noch einmal eine gute Stunde weiter nach Süden Richtung Lake Louise, wo der Parkway offiziell endet. Und mit einem Spaziergang am See, einem Kaffee im Schlosshotel, einer romantischen Kanufahrt oder einem Blick auf das Weltcup-Skigebiet verführen dort natürlich auch genügend Attraktionen zum Aussteigen. Empfehlenswert sind aber auch noch die restlichen 60 Kilometer bis Banff. Die Stadt ist nicht nur die touristische Metropole innerhalb der kanadischen Rockies und viel lebendiger (aber auch teurer) als das romantische Jasper, sondern auch das Ausfalltor zurück ins Flachland. Und irgendwie muss man ja wieder zurückkommen zum Flughafen in Calgary.

Warten auf Godot

Im Moment tut sich wirklich nicht viel. Ich hatte schon den abstrusen Plan Raimond um einen „Action Plan“ zu bitten – und habe es dann auch wirklich getan. Da kommt halt wieder „der Deutsche“ in mir durch. Da ich die Mail aber erst gestern nachmittag abgeschickt habe, ist logischerweise auch noch keine Antwort eingetroffen. Ich hoffe, dass Ray mich jetzt nicht für völlig verrückt hält, aber ich bin nun mal sehr gerne auf dem Laufenden.

Auch was unsere Möbel betrifft, sind wir noch keinen Schritt weiter. Wir haben zwar an Schwartz Furniture in Port Hawksbury eine entsprechende Anfrage geschickt, schön mit allen notwendigen Bestellnummern UND haben auch tatsächlich eine Antwort auf unsere Anfrage erhalten. Leider wurden nicht die von uns angefragten Artikel bepreist, sondern irgendwelche anderen Möbel. Offensichtlich wurden dort zwei verschiedene Anfragen miteinander verwechselt. Jetzt haben wir ein gutes Angebot für ein Schlafzimmer, dass wir gar nicht wollen.
Also haben wir jetzt unsere Anfrage noch einmal rausgeschickt, mit der Bitte, die Preise neben die entsprechenden Artikel zu schreiben. Ich bin gespannt, wann wir unser Angebot erhalten.

Es passiert also im Moment wirklich nicht viel. Ach ja, nachdem wir unseren Geldtransfer noch Kanada abgewickelt haben, auf einem fast historischen Tiefstkurs, erholt sich der €uro gerade wieder. Na ja, dass nennt man wohl „Murphy’s Law“.
