Cabot Trail CD driving guide now available to retailers

Officially launched this season; the Cabot Trail Companion audio guide has received widespread acclaim for its promotion of the culture, heritage and natural history of Cape Breton. It includes two CDs, a map, and a directory of tourist-related businesses. The CDs feature 2½ hours of interviews with personalities from along the Cabot Trail and from Cape Breton University. Publisher Jon Stackpool will be out around the Trail to distribute the guide to local gift shops, hotels and B&Bs. For every 12 copies ordered, retailers receive a free extra copy that can be used as a shop sample or sold (roughly a $20 to $25 value). Complimentary display stands are also available.

Der Unterschied zwischen Geldkurs und Briefkurs

Ich hatte ja bereits erwähnt, dass wir irgendwie eine nette Differenz zwischen den bereitgestellten Can$ und der €uronen-Belastung auf unserem Konto hatten. Es lag allerdings nicht daran, dass wir das „Geschäft“ bereits am Freitag getätigt haben und die Belastung erst am folgenden Montag erfolgt ist, sondern die Mitarbeiterin unserer Bank hat schlicht und einfach den Unterschied zwischen Geldkurs und Briefkurs verwechselt.

Grundsätzlich sollte das einem Bank-Mitarbeiter nicht passieren, aber „so what“. Jedenfalls haben wir durch diese Geschichte zumindest kein Geld verloren. Das ist ja auch schon mal was. Da ich aber auch immer Schwierigkeiten habe, Geld- und Briefkurs auseinander zuhalten, folgt an dieser Stelle einmal die offiziele Definition durch das Börsenlexikon der FAZ:

„Der Preis bzw. Kurs, zu dem Käufer bereit sind, Wertpapiere zu kaufen. Im Gegensatz hierzu ist der Briefkurs der Kurs, zu dem Verkäufer bereit sind, Wertpapiere zu verkaufen. Für die Begriffe Geldkurs und Briefkurs werden auch oft die englischen Begriffe „Bid“ und „Ask“ verwendet.“

Ansonsten gibt es aus Kanada nicht viel Neues. Ich denke, dass der Baubeginn im April erfolgen wird.
Ich habe mich schon gefragt, ob ich wohl so etwas wie einen „Activity Plan“ bekommen werde, der den genauen zeitlichen Ablauf vom Bau von „Red Cove Heights“ dokumentiert. Nach Rücksprache mit einem Freund in BC, sieht es allerdings nicht so aus, als wäre das in Kanada Standard. Als großer Freund von genauen Ablaufenplänen, sowie „Best – und Worst Case“ Szenarien, vermisse ich das natürlich. Da kommt mal wieder die typisch deutsche Kleinkrämer-Seele in mir durch. Wahrscheinlich fehlt mir doch noch die große Gelassenheit der Kanadier.

Die Netzvordenker rund um den Globus sind in Aufruhr: Der brillante Wissenschaftler Stephen Wolfram tritt an, Googles Allmacht zu brechen. Er hat eine bisher streng geheime Software programmiert – sie kann angeblich Antworten auf konkrete Suchanfragen geben.

So viel ist klar: Ginge es hier nicht um Stephen Wolfram, wäre die Aufregung, die seit dem Wochenende Teile des Internets erfasst hat, weniger groß. Einen Google-Killer wollten schon viele bauen – ihm aber traut man es zu.

„Zelluläre Automaten“ und Mathematica = Deep Thought?

„Ein neues Paradigma für den Gebrauch von Computern und den des Web“, nennt Wolfram selbst sein Projekt in einem Blogeintrag. Das klingt so vollmundig, dass man misstrauisch wird – schließlich sind schon viele bei dem Versuch gescheitert, eine mächtigere universelle Antwortmaschine als Google zu bauen.

Vor fünfzig Jahren, in der Frühzeit der Computer, habe man erwartet, dass Maschinen bald mit all dem umgehen könnten, schreibt Wolfram: „Dass man dem Computer nur eine Sachfrage stellen müsste, und ihn die Antwort ausrechnen lässt. Aber dazu kam es nicht.“ Nun, glaube er, sei man an einem Punkt, an dem dieses Versprechen endlich einzulösen sei. Mit der Kombination aus Mathematica und seinen Theorien über basale, elementare Programme, die er „zelluläre Automaten“ nennt. Mit einem Buch über dieses Thema „A new Kind of Science“ (online lesbar) machte Wolfram 2002 Furore, weit über die Welt der Mathematik und der Naturwissenschaften hinaus.

„Wolfram Alpha“ soll nun das Werkzeug heißen, die Website, über die man es wird benutzen können, ist schon online – aber ohne Funktion. Im Mai soll sich das ändern, und man kann davon ausgehen, dass man im Googleplex in Mountain View mit großem Interesse ausprobieren wird, ob das Angebot tatsächlich funktioniert. Denn Wolfram Alpha soll viel von dem machen, was auch Google macht – nur besser.

Fragen beantworten nämlich, in natürlicher Sprache gestellt. Mit Antworten, die nicht Listen von möglichen Orten sind, an denen man die Antwort finden könnte, sondern schlicht das jeweils gesuchte Faktum. Einen „computational knowledge engine“ nennt Wolfram das, eine „berechnende Wissensmaschine“ gewissermaßen. Entwickelt im Verlauf von Jahren, mit einem Team von angeblich etwa hundert Mitarbeitern. Der Entwickler selbst betrachtet das Ganze durchaus als Work in Progress: Genau wie Mathematica werde auch Wolfram Alpha vermutlich nie ganz fertig.

„Wolfram Alpha berechnet die Antworten“

Eine Suchmaschine im herkömmlichen Sinn wird Wolfram Alpha wohl nicht. Der Web-Unternehmer Nova Spivack hat sich den Prototypen schon ansehen dürfen, beschreibt das Werkzeug zunächst mal per Ausschlussverfahren: „Es wirft nicht einfach Dokumente aus, die vielleicht die Antwort enthalten, wie Google, und es ist nicht einfach eine gigantische Wissensdatenbank wie Wikipedia. Es versteht nicht nur natürliche Sprache und benutzt diese Fähigkeit, Dokumente zu finden, wie etwa Powerset.“

Nein, schreibt Spivack in einem langen, fast ehrfürchtigen Blogeintrag, „Wolfram Alpha berechnet die Antworten auf eine breite Palette von Fragen.“ Spivack hat zahlreiche Unternehmen gegründet – und er ist Fachmann für das semantische Web, einer, der die bisherigen Lösungsansätze für die ungelösten Fragen eines klügeren Netzes genau kennt. Sein Unternehmen Twine will auch ein schlaueres Netz schaffen, wenn auch mit einem völlig anderen Ansatz, einem sozialen.

Berechnen aber ist bei Wolfram Alpha das entscheidende Stichwort. Es besteht, den dürftigen bisher verfügbaren Informationen zufolge, aus drei Teilen: Einer gigantischen Datenbank, einer gewaltigen Ansammlung von Algorithmen und einem Übersetzer, der aus sprachlich formulierten Fragen Rechenaufgaben macht, die von den Algorithmen unter Zugriff auf die Datenbasis gelöst werden können. Diese Datenbank soll faktische Information über die Welt, über wissenschaftliche Modelle und Zusammenhänge, über Kochen und Musik, Geografie und Technik und zahlreiche andere Gebiete enthalten.

Keine durch Webcrawler zusammengesuchten Informationen, sondern, wie Wolfram selbst schreibt, „kuratierte“ Daten, und zwar „Billionen“ davon. Kuratiert heißt: Wolframs Team hat die Datensätze ausgewählt, ihre Quellen als verlässlich eingestuft. Seien es Aktienkurse, geografische Koordinaten oder Informationen über das menschliche Genom.

„Extrem eindrucksvolle und gründliche Antworten“

„Wolfram Alpha ist, als ob man sich in ein gewaltiges elektronisches Gehirn einstöpselt“, schrieb Nova Spivack nach seinem ersten Test. Es liefere „extrem eindrucksvolle und gründliche Antworten auf ein breites Spektrum von Fragen, auf viele verschiedene Arten gestellt.“ Und diese Antworten würden eben berechnet, „nicht einfach in einer großen Datenbank nachgeschlagen“. Die Verbindung zum Web käme erst in einem weiteren Schritt – neben den Antworten des Systems könnten Links präsentiert werden, etwa zum entsprechenden Wikipedia-Eintrag oder Fachpublikationen zum Thema.

Die Antworten seien jedoch extrem detailliert, angereichert mit Grafiken und teilweise so gründlich, so umfassend, „dass man einen Universitätsabschluss bräuchte, um sie vollständig zu verstehen“, schränkt Spivack ein. „Es wurde von und für Menschen mit Intelligenzquotienten in der Region von Wolframs konstruiert – man wird einige Arbeit hineinstecken müssen, um es ein paar hundert Punkte dümmer zu machen, um den Durchschnittskonsumenten nicht zu überwältigen.“

Der Schöpfer der Denkmaschine sieht das naturgemäß anders. Das System werde, beendet Wolfram seinen Blogeintrag, „uns beinahe an den Punkt bringen, von dem die Menschen schon vor 50 Jahren dachten, dass Computer ihn erreichen würden.“
